CEO, President and Founder: Abbass Berjaoui
Abbass is a fourth year undergraduate student at Wayne State University pursuing a B.A. in Philosophy and plans to pursue an M.D. and MPH. Striving to promote health equity, Abbass is pursuant to narrowing health disparities in Southeastern Michigan. By educating and equipping students with the skill set they need to become tomorrow's health care professionals, MedEq can truly make a difference and create a fair playing field for our health system. Abbass' background in the realm of health is well documented through multiple research fellowships, shadowing opportunities and various philanthropic initiatives to help the needy. Specifically, he has taken initiative in several environmental and public health projects including his previous two: Green Chemistry and Environmental Health. Currently, Abbass is conducting research about health disparities affecting Arab Americans regarding a broad range of topics.Through MedEq, Abbass hopes he can equip members with these kinds of experiences and enhance their professional development as they venture out into the workforce. Outside of school, Abbass enjoys traveling, sports, hiking and camping.
Program Manager: Nour Mahmoud
Nour is a fourth year at Wayne State University working on her bachelor's of science degree in biology with intention to attend dental school. With her founding of MedEq, Nour is able to achieve her goal of providing dental education, resources to find affordable health care, and getting dental products into the hands of those who can not afford them. With her persistent dedication towards dentistry, Nour adds an added dimension to MedEq and represents other pre-health students. Nour organizes community outreach, event planning related to dental and oral health, networking with health care professionals, and reaching out to potential MedEq presenters.
CFO and Treasurer: Abdulrahman Suleiman
Abdul Suleiman is a fourth year student majoring in Biology and minoring in Political Science. He is interested in becoming a physician surpassing the barriers of traditional care. Abdul seeks to integrate the education he receives with an interdisciplinary approach. Moving beyond theory and into application, he has become heavily involved in research while also developing leadership and social skills that will be pivotal for success in any future career. Because of this, he is involved in the Board of Governors, Academic Senate, Student Senate and is involved with other organizations. He urges all students to use their undergraduate years to find their passion and develop their skills beyond just the classroom. Finally, Abdul wishes to represent the External Affairs Committee to the best of his abilities and welcomes advice from all.
Public Relations: Rasha Khanafer
Rasha Khanafer is a fourth year at Wayne State University pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Psychology with Honors and a minor in Arabic. For the majority of her high school and college careers, Rasha has focused on serving her community through philanthropic efforts. Rasha believes that MedEq is the perfect organization for her to alleviate health disparities within the Detroit community. In the future, she hopes to become a physician and actively contribute to a health system that is fair to all of its patients. Rasha's ultimate goal is to use her education to combat poverty and work with Medicines Sans Frontiers in the future. In her free time, Rasha enjoys playing soccer, spending time with her family, and attending galas.
Secretary: Mohammed Turfe
Mohammed is a Senior pursuing a double major in Sociology and Public Health at the Irvin D. Reid Honors College. Throughout his life, Mohammed has had an innate passion for promoting health equity and ensuring that everyone is able to reach their full health potential. His experience in this field derives from involvement with various organizations such as the Dearborn Heights Watershed and Stewards Commission and Zaman International. Through his tenure with MedEq, Mohammed is set out to increase awareness and education of ubiquitous heath disparities via the organization’s blog. He hopes that the blog can serve as a mechanism for allowing members to engage in academically engaging conversations about core fundamental issues in our health care system. In his free time, Mohammed cherishes partaking in environmentally friendly initiatives, playing basketball, reading and spending time with friends and family.
