Kameron Matthews

Dr. Kameron Matthews is a board certified family physician and currently serves as the Deputy Under Secretary for Health for Community Care at the Veterans Health Administration in Washington, DC. She is responsible for the community-based provider network and services that increases access to care for veterans nationwide, as well as the business processes on how care is purchased including claims processing and revenue collection, and quality oversight. Dr. Matthews earned her medical degree from Johns Hopkins University and her law degree at the University of Chicago. She completed her residency in Family Medicine at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Dr. Matthews has focused her career on underserved patient populations, having worked as a staff physician at Cook County Jail and with Erie Family Health Center, a large community health center also in Chicago. She most recently served as Chief Medical Officer of Mile Square Health Center within the University of Illinois Hospital and Health Sciences System. She is a National President Emeritus of SNMA and is a member of the Regional Alumni Council of the National Medical Fellowships. She is a Lead Analyst for PolicyPrescriptions.org, an evidence-based health policy website. She was honored to be awarded the 2015 National Medical Association Council for the Concerns of Women Physicians Emerging Trailblazer Award, the 2015 NACHC Health Professions Education and Training Award, the 2015 Congressional Black Caucus Foundation Health Braintrust Congressman Louis Stokes Public Health Advocate Award, and the 2017 National Minority Quality Forum 40 Under 40 Leader in Minority Health Award. Dr. Matthews is honored to have been chosen as the 2018-2020 National Academy of Medicine - American Board of Family Medicine James C. Puffer Fellow. As a passion outside of work, she co-directs the Tour for Diversity in Medicine (www.tour4diversity.org), an initiative seeking to bring premedical enrichment activities to minority high school and undergraduate students across the country. Founded in 2012, T4D has provided exposure, mentoring, and motivation to more than 3000 students across 26 states with upcoming visits to additional states and campuses planned.
